How We Test Golf Putters

How we test golf putters

We're dedicated to making sure that we at Today's Golfer are clear and transparent on how we test equipment, so you know you can trust the information that you read.

This year, we decided to adopt a fresh approach to helping you make the most informed buying choice when looking for a new putter.

The relationship you have with your putter is likely to be the most intimate in your bag, and the reasons we all have for gaming one flatstick over another are highly nuanced.

You only have to look at the variety of winning putters on Tour to understand why there is more at play in the decision-making process than plumping for the latest tech-infused heads or judging exclusively from what one launch monitor test suggests.

It’s far more subtle, which is why the whole team here at TG were asked for exactly what they look for in a putter. And while exact wording differed, the vast majority of responses overlapped, making it straightforward to distill down into five statements from which all 72 putters were evaluated.

After each 15-putt set, each of our seven testers were asked how strongly they agreed or disagreed with the following statements:

  1. Looks: The putter’s overall look is pleasing.
  2. Alignment: The putter’s alignment markings are helpful.
  3. Stability: The putter’s head remains stable through contact.
  4. Feel & Sound: The putter provides feedback that helps repeat a desired stroke.
  5. Roll: The putter produces a roll that keeps putts on line and to pace.

Each response was given a numerical value between one and five (1= strongly disagree / 5=strongly agree) to give a mark out of 25 for each putter, which was then averaged out across the seven testers. This provided a final score, which we’ve expressed as a percentage to help show you how our opinion was weighted.

Where did we test?

We performed our 2025 putters test at the amazing Prince's Golf Club in Kent, England. They have two outstanding putting greens, one directly outside the newly refurbished clubhouse and the other by The Lodge. The test was spread out over two days, but on both days we did everything exactly the same. We set out seven stations, so everyone was putting at the same time, and every tester completed five of the stations, making three putts at each.

Putters

As our largest putters test to date, we tested 72 putters in total - 24 blades, 37 mallets, and 11 zero-torque. With each putter, every tester hit 15 putts, which meant that every putter was hit 105 times. In total, we hit 7,560 putts.

Our test included 19 manufacturers, with a wide range of putters.

The golf ball

To get the best and most reliable data possible, we always insist on using a premium golf ball.

Over the last few years, we’ve used several of the best golf balls to conduct our testing, including the Callaway Chrome Tour, Bridgestone Tour-B, and Titleist Pro V1. This year, we used the TaylorMade TP5.

The TP5 offers consistency and performance that is up to the standards of numerous tour pros, including Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, and has won many Majors.
