Keeping your core at the right temperature is critical because not only will it help you play better golf, but it’ll also add to the enjoyment of your round. The key is to have all the necessary combinations available to you on the golf course so that you can combat low temperatures, high winds, wet weather, or (hopefully not) a combination of all three.

I absolutely love that the Wilson OC Half Zip has pockets. I wouldn't say they're a must in a mid-layer, but I much prefer having them than not.
The collar is extremely stiff, which is great whether you zip the mid-layer right up or if you wear it unzipped. Unlike the collar, the hem of the OC Half Zip is elasticated, but thanks to the stretch properties of this mid-layer, it sits well on all body types.
The cuffs on the sleeves are fairly big, but they prevent the sleeves from interfering with your grip. I don't like it when I have to keep pulling my sleeves up; with the OC Half Zip, I never have to.
I've worn this mid-layer in warm and cold weather, it genuinely is that versatile. It's breathable and quick drying, which is perfect for warmer and cooler climates.
When I've worn this mid-layer away from the golf course I've received several compliments because it's incredibly stylish. The subtle Wilson branding compliments the OC Half Zip perfectly.

You can wear the Travis Mathew Cloud Quarter Zip all day without ever feeling the need to take it off because it's not comfortable enough. I wear this mid-layer on and off the golf course because of its comfort and its modern and classic style.
I think the Cloud Quarter Zip pairs as well with a pair of jeans as it does with a pair of Travis Mathew Open To Close golf pants.

Most versatile mid-layer
Unless there’s a significant change in temperature, this mid-layer does exactly what it promises. On chilly days, it does a fantastic job of keeping you warm, while in warmer conditions, it regulates heat effectively to prevent overheating.
One of the standout reasons I love wearing Under Armour, especially in the UK, is the brand’s excellent performance in wet weather. Thanks to UA Storm technology, this hybrid top is no exception. It repels water exceptionally well - perfect for light rain or drizzly rounds. Unless you’re caught in a torrential downpour, you’ll stay comfortable and dry.
The water-resistant functionality doesn’t compromise comfort. The mid-layer is lightweight, stretchy, and doesn't restrict your movement during your swing, making it an excellent choice for variable weather conditions.
A very smart mid-layer that's highly practical
This Peter Millar Beaumont Performance Quarter Zip isn't the warmest golf mid-layer on this list but it will keep you warm if you layer up with this and the Peter Millar Merge Hybrid Jacket because it's a combination I frequently resort to playing around Cleveland Golf Club on a cold day.
I'm not normally a fan of the striped/ribbed pattern, but I think it works on the Beaumont mid-layer because it's a stylish and elegant quarter zip you can wear on and off the golf course.
The fleece interior is very comfortable and breathable, which paired with the moisture-wicking properties, ensures you don't overheat or sweat profusely during your round.
Thanks to the four-way stretch fabric, you're not restricted whatsoever while you're swinging - even if you go after one like Bryson. Considering the material is lightweight, the collar is very rigid and it doesn't flop.

A classic mid-layer that you can easily stash in your golf bag
The Ashworth Comfort Stretch 1/4 Zip, on the other hand, is a mid-layer I have had the pleasure of wearing. This is quite often the mid-layer I stick in my golf bag in case I need to add another layer on while I'm playing golf because it's versatile, lightweight, and non-restricting.
The only issue I found with this mid-layer is that the small was too small, so if you're thinking of buying, I'd definitely size up. Once I had found the perfect size, I found myself wearing this mid-layer very often for the reasons stated above.

Crafted from incredibly soft and stretchy terry fabric, this garment is lightweight, comfortable, and highly mobile.
I was genuinely impressed with the overall package. The fit is slightly relaxed but contours to the body nicely, providing a flattering and functional design.
The sleeves deserve special mention - particularly the cuffs. It may seem like a small detail, but cuffs that ride up during a swing can be incredibly annoying. Thankfully, that isn’t an issue with the Brushed Back Tech Quarter Zip.
This mid-layer sits well on any body type, with a length that feels just right - not too long or too short. One unique aspect is its understated branding. At first glance, the product's brand may not be immediately obvious, but I quite like this.
The standout detail is the G/FORE logo on the zipper, which adds a touch of class without being overly bold.
If you're a golfer seeking a premium look and feel paired with performance, this mid-layer is a fantastic choice.

Best athletic mid-layer
I’ve personally worn it to take the edge off on a chilly July morning and during a wet, windy round in mid-November. For me, a great mid-layer is all about versatility, and the Dri-FIT ADV Half Zip delivers in spades.
The loose, comfortable fit is spot on. Any golfer knows how frustrating ill-fitting clothing can be, so having a top that fits well and moves effortlessly with your swing is always appreciated.
The stretch-knit fabric is the real star here. It’s so light you might forget you’re wearing it, yet it retains and releases heat brilliantly, keeping you comfortable in a range of conditions.
My favorite feature has to be its effortless style and functionality. This piece layers seamlessly into any outfit and looks as good off the course as it does on it.
A super comfortable mid-layer with excellent thermal qualities.
I would suggest sizing up if you're between sizes as it has quite a sporty, athletic fit that some may find a bit restrictive despite the four-way stretch fabric. The metal zip-pull looks like it might not stand the test of time, although I'll be happy to be proved wrong.

Swing freely, without resistant in this warm mid-layer
Thanks to its thermal properties this mid-layer will keep you warm in cold temperatures. However, because of the Opti-Dri technology, any moisture is moved away from the body keeping you cool and dry - preventing you from overheating on the golf course.
The double-knit fabrication pieces together two layers of fabric which gives the Hex Quarter Zip its extra thickness and warmth.
The textured hexagonal print definitely catches your eye but it won't be a pattern that every golfer likes. In the blue colorway, I really like the hexagonal pattern.
The collar is very rigid which stops it from flopping if you don't have the mid-layer zipped right up. It's very comfortable to swing in the Hex Quarter Zip because of the Swing Tech technology.

A light-weight mid-layer perfect for layering-up in cold weather
This mid-layer is perfect in cold weather because of the brushed fleece inner. This also makes it a very comfortable mid-layer.
The fabric is knitted and stretchy with is a great combination because it ensures you keep warm but you aren't ever restricted in your swing.
The sleeve pocket adds something to the design but I can't say I've ever found a need for this pocket. The striped design definitely won't be to everyone's liking, including mine, but I only wear this mid-layer when I'm layering up because it keeps me warm in the coldest of conditions.

Some golfers might purchase a golf mid-layer after browsing a couple of websites or visiting a handful of stores and picking the one they like the look of best. However, it’s worth considering much more than this when you buy your next mid-layer. Yes, we all want to feel comfortable in the clothing we wear, so considering the way it looks on your body is important, but there are other factors worth noting so you buy the best golf mid-layer for your needs.
Comfort
You don’t want to be itching to take a layer off while you’re playing golf, you want to feel comfortable. A golf mid-layer is perhaps the most important layer when you’re wearing multiple layers. You don’t want it to be too tight that it feels as though you can’t complete your swing, or swing how you would if you were playing in just a polo shirt. At the same time, you don’t want it to be too loose so that it doesn’t do its job of keeping you warm, or prevent you from adding any layers on top.
The other important aspect of comfort is how it feels on your skin. While you don’t want to be itching to take it off, you also don’t want to be itching while it’s on. All of the best golf mid-layers listed above are extremely comfortable, so if you opt for one of those you won’t go wrong.

I’m grouping looks, design, and style together because I think they all bring something different to the party but, ultimately, they all cover a different area. Looks are obviously ambiguous, depending on the design and style it’ll lead you to like or loathe the look of a mid-layer.
Finding a golf mid-layer you like the look of will increase its versatility and make it better value for money because you’re more likely to wear it when you play golf and potentially when you’re not playing golf.
Personally, I’m a fan of a very simplistic design. You might be different. Hopefully, among the best golf mid-layers listed above there’s a design that suits your preference. My opinion is that if the design is very simple and understated then you’re more likely to pair with mid-layer with more outfits, thus increasing its versatility and bettering its value for money.
By style, I’m referring to how it fits, how it sits on your body, and what category of clothing it falls under. The categories of clothing here are whether it’s modern, traditional, athletic, etc. every golfer will have their own individual style that leads them to buy a certain golf mid-layer.
Some golfers will prefer a relaxed fit over an athletic fit and vice versa. In the list of the best golf mid-layers above there is a mix of athletic and relaxed fitting mid-layers. Depending on what materials have gone into crafting the mid-layer influences how it fits. Versatility within a specific product can come from how well it keeps you warm in cold weather, cool in warm weather, and dry in wet conditions. It isn’t hard to find golf mid-layers that can do all of the above but some are better than others.
Another factor leading to a golf mid-layers versatility is whether you can wear it off the golf course and it doesn’t scream, “I’m a piece of golf clothing”, because this makes it better value for money.
Properties
Depending on what type of golf mid-layer you’re shopping for will impact what properties it has. For instance, some mid-layers are designed to keep you warm and others are designed to cool you down. Obviously, the most versatile mid-layers have multiple properties.
However, it’s always worth considering what properties are important to you and which ones will benefit you. Personally, I don’t sweat much, so I never really see a need for finding a moisture-wicking mid-layer because there isn’t much, if any, moisture to wick away. You could be the polar opposite, and moisture-wicking is the main property you need.
Other typical properties are breathability, stretchy, and quick-drying. Like with moisture-wicking, the importance of these properties will depend on you as an individual. Mid-layers designed to be worn in cold weather also come with properties designed to keep you warm, and certain mid-layers sport water-repellent features that’ll keep you dry in showers. Although, you’ll still need one of the best golf waterproof jackets to ensure you remain dry in serious downpours.
Storage
The majority of golf mid-layers don’t come equipped with storage space because they aren’t necessarily meant to be worn as the top layer – hence why they’re called mid-layers. However, there are some that have pockets.
I love having pockets on a mid-layer because I’m the type of golfer who’ll wear a mid-layer whatever the weather. I’d rather wear a pair of golf shorts and a mid-layer than a pair of golf pants and a polo. I don’t mind having bits and bobs rattling my pants and shorts pockets, but having pockets in a mid-layer allows me to distribute items evenly and not have any bulging pockets.
I also hate it if I have a golf jacket on, which I’m storing items in while I’m playing golf, and when I take it off my mid-layer doesn’t have any because I now have to mix my tees, ball marker, ball, and glove in one pocket (first world problems I know)!
