Kington Golf Club

Set at 1,284 feet above sea level, Kington is the highest golf course in England and affords views over seven counties. 

Its fast-draining heathland terrain means it is playable all year round.

The biggest allure is Cecil Hutchison’s intriguing design, fitting the holes – especially the greens – into the land. 

The par-70 (5,583-5,961-yards) inland links on Bradnor Hill, is the highest 18-hole course in England, with its creator Major Hutchison – a fan of North Berwick, whose intricacies can de detected here – taking full advantage of its glorious natural National Trust land featuring the historic Offa’s Dyke walk. 

It is miles from the sea but there are links hallmarks in the shapes, challenges and quirks, if not the turf or number of bunkers (there are none). You also won’t find any water features here.

The quality year-round greens – temporary greens simply don’t exist here – and the breathtaking panoramic views of Brecon Beacons National Park and the Black Mountains and beyond are special.

Now established in the middle of our Top 100 England and in the top five of our Great Britain and Ireland Top 100 £60 and Under, this is one of the most intriguing and entertaining courses in Britain.
