How do we test fairway woods?

Today's Golfer makes sure that how we test golf clubs and equipment is always to the most rigorous standards.

To ensure the utmost accuracy in our testing and to provide you with reliable, data-driven insights for making well-informed decisions about your golf game, we requested that all brands send their latest 2025 fairway woods to be tested according to the specifications of Neil Wain, our expert tester and PGA Professional.

For consistency, we tested each fairway wood with standard 15-degrees of loft (typically seen in a 3-wood) paired with a stock extra-stiff shaft. Neil, who averaged a swing speed of 112 mph during the session, is of the faster swing speeds compared to the average golfer. Because of this, we highly recommend using our findings in conjunction with our buying guides to help tailor your choice to your individual game.

Our testing took place at Keele Golf Centre, where we employed a Foresight GC Quad launch monitor to capture precise data, while using a TaylorMade TP5x ball to ensure optimal launch conditions specific to Neil’s swing. Throughout the process, we tracked strike location on every shot to ensure no data outliers were included in our analysis.

Data collected from the GCQuad has then been analyzed and filtered by our own Ross Tugwood, a data scientist who has worked with some of the best athletes in the world, including Olympic-level performers for Team GB. Ross has broken down the numbers to provide accurate feedback on flight and dispersion with each model of fairway wood, allowing us to decipher the best performance model for your golf game based on the key parameters that will be important to you.
