The Pitch 37.5 is one of the best waterproof jackets available thanks to technology developed by American Dr Gregory Haggquist. The photophysical chemist and inventor’s goal was to find a way of keeping the body’s core temperature at an optimal 37.5°C.

Haggquist embedded volcanic sand within fabric which absorbs infrared light emitted by the human body. The fabric then uses the levels of light to decide whether the body is too hot or cold: the porous particles retain heat if the body is too cool and no moisture is present, or remove moisture and cool you down when the body starts to warm.

It’s all very clever stuff and explains why the Pitch 37.5 was featured among our Editor’s Choice Awards winners this year.
